Introduction
The New York State Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) was founded upon the following:
- The mission of the New York State Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NYSMATYC) shall be to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics at the two-year college level through professional growth opportunities for its members, to promote and enhance the professional development of its members, and to maintain open communication among mathematics educators at all levels.
- To maintain a continual rapport among all the Two-Year Colleges represented in this organization on all matters pertaining to the mathematics education at the Two-Year Colleges.
- To continually improve the teaching of mathematics.
- To promote and enhance the professional welfare of all members.
The
purpose of this document is to show the
growth of NYSMATYC over the past forty years and to identify many of
the
activities the organization has undertaken to fulfill the objectives
mentioned
above. Although the material presented is primarily in
summary form, it
is hoped that the reader will gain a feeling for the breadth and depth
of the
involvement of NYSMATYC in the betterment of mathematics education.
The history of NYSMATYC is a testimony to the efforts and energy of its
members
to "get the job done." Many of our members not only have played an
important and vital role at the state level, but have also been
recognized for
their contributions and involvement at the national level, especially
in the
American Mathematics Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC). Our
history
clearly demonstrates that our Association is an innovative and viable
group
dedicated to making mathematics education in New York State a
satisfying and
rewarding experience for students and faculty.
